| Doodle Generations...
One of the more confusing things about looking at Doodle pups (Labradoodles, Goldendoodles, Double Doodles... the list goes on) is the terminology used referring to their generation.
If you are interested in a full description of generations with pictures and specifics, I suggest you check out the GOLDENDOODLES.com page on generations. It explains in detail the generations of Golden Doodles and Labradoodles. Once you get that down, you can easily transfer the knowledge to other cross breeds.
If you are interested in just a quick overview, here's my take: (I'll use Labradoodles since that's the first thing I'm breeding)
F1 Labradoodle = 1 Labrador parent x 1 Poodle parent These are delightful dogs that demonstrate hybrid vigor and usually have a scruffy/shaggy look. HOWEVER while these dogs tend to be more allergy friendly than a straight Labrador Retriever, they are NOT as allergy friendly as an F1b or multigenerational Labradoodle.
F1b Labradoodle = 1 F1 labradoodle parent x 1 Poodle parent This is often referred to as a backcross (the "b" in F1b) and is 75% poodle and 25% Labrador. An F1b is generally much more allergy-friendly however they can vary greatly in coat depending on the F1 to which they are bred. If the F1 is a very curly-coated Labradoodle, the F1b can end up very poodle-coated and require lots of grooming/clipping. If bred to an F1 with a more labby coat they will tend to be less thick and easier to maintain (this is my preference & opinion for F1b coats - please feel to look elsewhere for other opinions!). Multigenerational Labradoodle: F1 parent x F1 parent = F2 puppy (take care when considering an F2 from this paring as there can be a higher likelyhood of "throw-back" pups who will be more like the original parent than what we have come to expect as a Labradoodle) F1b parent x F1 parent = F2 puppy F1 parent x F2 parent = F2 puppy (it is my understanding that the generation can only advance ONE NUMBER beyond the LOWEST number either parent) F2 parent x F2 parent = F3 puppy F3 parent x F3 parent = F4 puppy F4 parent x F4 parent = F5 puppy As the generations progress the breeder has to be very careful selecting breeding dogs and choosing who to mate to whom in order to promote specific coat types or temperaments. Generally breeders who have gone beyond the second generation of doodle are working towards developing specific traits and having the breed oficially recognized. Obviously this is done over a period of years and the price of the multigenerational doodles rightfully reflects the time and effort put into developing this breed.
